What does LGBTQIA+ include?
LGBTQIA+ is an inclusive acronym with room for everyone. It includes people who are:
- Lesbian
- Gay
- Bisexual
- Transgender
- Questioning
- Intersex
- Asexual
- Allies
- Pansexual
- Non-binary
- Gender fluid
- Polyamorous
There are many others whose personal identities don’t correspond with heteronormative and cisgender identities — and all are welcome as members of the LGBTQIA+ group.
What kinds of challenges do LGBTQIA+ people face?
While society is becoming more inclusive, LGBTQIA+ people can still face a great deal of discrimination and prejudice as both young people and adults.
LGBTQIA+ adults are twice as likely to have mental health challenges and conditions as their heterosexual counterparts, and mental health conditions are four times as common in transgender people compared with cisgender people.
LGBTQIA+ youth are especially vulnerable to mental health challenges. They have a much higher incidence of suicidal ideation and suicide than heterosexual people, and transgender youth have an even higher risk of suicide than their lesbian, gay, and bisexual counterparts.
Many LGBTQIA+ people of all ages deal with anxiety, depression, fear, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other challenges.
These symptoms may be particularly pronounced if you’re facing family problems, harassment, prejudice, work problems, and other issues in your day-to-day life.
