Anxiety makes you feel nervous, worried, or scared and is a normal reaction to situations with unknown outcomes. However, if you worry excessively about everyday things or your anxiety is so bad it makes it hard to go to work or school, you may have an anxiety disorder. At Meisel NP in Psychiatry, Jason Meisel, NP, provides therapy to help you understand your anxiety and develop tools so it no longer runs your life. To schedule a consultation, call the office in the Park Slope area of Brooklyn in New York City, or book an appointment online today.
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety triggers feelings of unease, dread, or worry and is a normal reaction to stressful situations. It helps you cope with stress by boosting energy and focus. Once the stressful situation is over, your anxiety resolves.
However, if your anxiety fails to go away and gets worse over time, making it hard for you to go about your daily routine, you may have an anxiety disorder.
What are the types of anxiety disorders?
There are many types of anxiety disorders. Symptoms of these types are often similar, but the cause of the anxiety varies.
Types of anxiety disorders include:
GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER (GAD)
GAD causes excessive worry and fear about everyday things such as health, family, or bills. With GAD, the anxiety occurs daily and lasts all day for six or more months.
PANIC DISORDER
If you experience recurring, unexpected panic attacks, you have a panic disorder. Panic attacks cause severe symptoms that are both physical (heart palpitations, sweating) and emotional (feeling of doom) and that last several minutes.
PHOBIAS
A phobia is an excessive fear of a specific thing or situation, such as a fear of heights or spiders.
Social anxiety disorder
Social anxiety disorder is a type of phobia in which you fear embarrassing yourself or being negatively judged when socializing with others.
People in the LGBTQ community often struggle with social anxiety disorder. At Meisel NP in Psychiatry, Jason specializes in the mental health needs of LGBTQ individuals.
What happens during an anxiety consultation?
When you visit Meisel NP in Psychiatry for an anxiety consultation, you and Jason first spend time getting to know each other.
He asks detailed questions about your symptoms and life to better understand your mental health needs. He also reviews your medical and mental health history, as well as your family history.
How is Anxiety treated?
Jason customizes your anxiety treatment plan based on type and symptoms. Your treatment plan may include:
COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)
CBT is a therapeutic technique that teaches you how to identify the negative thoughts that trigger your anxiety. Then, you and Jason work on ways to neutralize those thoughts so they no longer cause the intense reaction.
MEDICATION MANAGEMENT
Meisel NP in Psychiatry offers medication management for mental health conditions like anxiety. Jason also provides ketamine therapy as a treatment option.
